Ultrafiltration

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a membrane-based water treatment process used to remove suspended solids, bacteria, viruses, and high molecular weight organic compounds from wastewater. It acts as a physical barrier with very fine pores that allow only water and dissolved salts to pass through while retaining contaminants. In operation, wastewater is pushed through hollow fiber or flat sheet membranes under pressure. The membrane selectively separates impurities, producing high-quality filtered water with very low turbidity and improved clarity. The retained contaminants are periodically removed through backwashing or cleaning cycles. Ultrafiltration is often used as a pre-treatment step for Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems to protect membranes from fouling and improve overall efficiency. It ensures stable water quality and reduces the load on downstream processes. Due to its high removal efficiency and reliable performance, Ultrafiltration is widely used in municipal water treatment, industrial wastewater reuse, pharmaceutical production, food processing, and desalination plants.
